Caitlin Shearer: Vintage, Cats and Lavender...

I decide to start my blog introducing Caitlin, because she inspired me to create this.
When I bumped into her drawings, I liked them so much, I even got a bit depressed, thinking everything I had done sucked, and felt really frustrated :P
But well, love hurts...
This marine broke my heart :)
And I completely loooove Caitlin's work.
When I accept this, in a possitive way ;) I became so curious about the person behind this beautiful drawings!...
And i had to show her stunning work!!!

So, here, with you...

A bit of Caitlin

Caitlin Shearer, is a 21 year old Illustrator, from Sydney, Australia.

"I love painting vintage inspired people in watercolours and creating new characters who didn't exist in the world beforehand."

She's the oldest, and only girl, from 4 siblings.
The hardest part of growing up in her family, was longing for a little sister to share makeup and tea parties with, when she only had brothers obsessed with video games and wrestling and waterpistols.
The best thing is that being the eldest and a girl, she gets to rule the roost!
And also, "being able to coerce my brothers occasionally into dressing up as girls with lots of make-up and fancy hairstyles." :)

Apart from being the guinea pig for childhood and teenagehood, graduation and leaving the nest, and life's dramatic changes, her role in the family, has been the one of the sister who cooks tasty dinners and who is pretty nice most of the time.

In highschool, when she was around 16, she became obsessed with drawing and painting, and would spend all her free time scribbling in sketchbooks and experimenting with different paint and pens and papers.

"I felt alienated at highschool and the area she lived in, so it was a sort of a retreat and comfort to be able to create a new world of people and places inside these pieces of paper."

Thats how she spent the rest of highschool -most of her weekends/breaks/afternoons- drawing and becoming involved with artistic communities on the internet where people her age were also keen to create.

Upon graduating she studied fine arts at University for one year, but dropped out because she wasn't happy with a lot of things.
Two years later, she's just working out of her bedroom, doing work for different publications and people and trying to strengthen her art as the months go by. "This is only the beginning, and in twenty or thirty years perhaps i'll be creating masterpieces. (fingers crossed!)"

10 years from now, Caitlin would like to be:
"in love with some kind of wonderful man, with some sweet little babies and a delicate cottage house covered in vines. maybe in the english countryside with brambly roads and I'll have a little bike with a basket that i could put milk and bread and flowers into.
Perhaps working as a cover designer at a publishing house, and creating work for textile prints, magazines, exhibitions and such."

Who or what inspires you?:
Fred Astaire, David Lynch, Winona Ryder, Bettie Page, Laura Laine, Vintage Cinema, mermaids, 1950's kitschy pastel poodles, Sofia Coppola, movie star biographies, loneliness.

How would you describe your work? (what do you think makes us realize it's Caitlin's):
Perhaps it's the pastel colour palette, the pale skin, the abundance of women. i'm too close to my work to be able to tell properly, i think.

If you could make a wish, what would it be?:
i wish that my life takes a smooth path.
